What This Calculator Does
This calculator determines your overall grade percentage and letter grade from individual assignment scores. It supports both simple averaging (equal weight) and weighted categories, making it useful for courses that weight exams, homework, and participation differently. Enter each assignment with points earned and points possible to see your current standing.
The Formula
In weighted mode, each assignment percentage is multiplied by its weight, and the results are summed and divided by total weight. In simple mode, all earned points are summed and divided by all possible points for a straightforward percentage.
Step-by-Step Example
Add assignments
Enter each assignment with points earned and total points possible. Example: Midterm 85/100, Final 90/100.
Choose weighting
Toggle weighted mode if your syllabus assigns different weights to categories. Example: Exams 70%, Homework 20%, Participation 10%.
Calculate
Weighted example: (85% x 30) + (90% x 40) + (92% x 20) + (88% x 10) = 89.2%.
Review letter grade
89.2% = B+ on the standard scale.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
Entering weights that do not add up to 100%. If they do not sum correctly, the weighted average will be skewed.
Confusing points earned with percentage. If an assignment is worth 50 points and you scored 45, enter 45/50, not 45/100.
Forgetting that a zero on a heavily weighted assignment has a much larger impact than on a lightly weighted one.
