What This Calculator Does

This GPA calculator computes your semester Grade Point Average on the standard 4.0 scale used by most US colleges and universities. It accepts multiple courses with individual grades and credit hours, and optionally calculates cumulative GPA when you provide your existing GPA and credit total. The tool supports the full letter grade range from A+ to F.

The Formula

GPA = Total Quality Points / Total Credit Hours | Quality Points = Grade Points x Credit Hours

Each letter grade corresponds to a numeric value on the 4.0 scale (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, etc.). Quality points for each course equal the grade points multiplied by the credit hours. The GPA is the sum of all quality points divided by total credit hours.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Forgetting that A+ and A both equal 4.0 on the standard scale. Some institutions may use a 4.3 scale for A+.

  • Not weighting by credit hours. A 4-credit course impacts your GPA twice as much as a 2-credit course.

  • Confusing semester GPA with cumulative GPA. Semester GPA only covers the current term.

  • Including pass/fail or audited courses that do not count toward GPA.
