What This Calculator Does
This state income tax calculator computes income tax liability for all 50 states and Washington D.C. using 2026 projected tax brackets, flat rates, and standard deductions. It covers nine no-income-tax states, 13 flat-rate states, and 29 progressive (graduated bracket) states. The tool shows effective and marginal tax rates, bracket-by-bracket breakdown, standard deduction applied, and net income after state tax for both single and married filing jointly statuses.
The Formula
For progressive-rate states, income is taxed in layers. The first dollars of taxable income are taxed at the lowest rate, and each additional portion is taxed at progressively higher rates. Only the income within each bracket is taxed at that bracket rate. For flat-rate states, all taxable income is taxed at one rate. Nine states (Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, Wyoming) impose no state income tax on wages and salaries.

Retirement Destination
Compare state tax treatment of retirement income to optimize where to retire. Some states exempt Social Security and pension income.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Confusing marginal rate with effective rate. Your marginal rate is the rate on the last dollar of income. Your effective rate is total tax divided by total income and is always lower in progressive systems.
Forgetting local income taxes. Several cities and counties impose their own income taxes (New York City, Yonkers, many Ohio cities, some Maryland counties, and others). This calculator covers state-level tax only.
Assuming no-income-tax states have no taxes. States without income tax often have higher property taxes, sales taxes, or other fees. Consider total tax burden, not just income tax.
Not adjusting for state-specific deductions and credits. Many states offer deductions and credits beyond the standard deduction that can significantly reduce liability.
